Sometimes a song demands to be written, & doesn’t let up until you are done. Thrashing out a song in one siting doesn’t allow you to overthink or pretty the lyrics up – it’s the unvarnished, god’s honest truth. I wrote ‘Just Like A Friend’ in 2013, after a German tour, in the midst of recording my third album, at a stage in my life when everything seemed to be in flux (ain’t it always so?). At times like these, one really has to stop, take a deep breath & count one’s blessings. So I did. ‘Friend’ is a celebration of the gifts bestowed on us by our (too often overlooked & underappreciated) support systems. For that reason, the song is as fresh to me now as it was the rainy Tuesday evening in January I threw it down on paper.
lyrics
Ain't that just like the sun,
Trying to bring me up when I'm feeling down?
Ain't that just like the rain,
To wash my cares down the drain?
I'm watching my sorrows drown.
Ain't that just like your eyes,
Trying to look me out when I wanna hide?
Ain't that just like your smile,
Calming my mind a while,
And taking me by surprise?
‘Cause I waited, yeah I waited, so long,
For you to come along.
Yeah I waited, and I waited, so long,
For you to come along,
For you to come along,
For you to come along.
Ain't that just like the sea,
Stealing my heart with a melody?
Ain't that just like the sky,
Filling me with a high?
I'm right where I wanna be.
Ain't that just like the wind,
Blowing me right out of my skin?
Ain't that just like a friend,
Picking me up again,
And asking me how I been?
‘Cause I waited, yeah I waited, so long,
For you to come along.
Yeah I waited, and I waited, so long,
For you to come along,
For you to come along,
For you to come along,
For you to come along,
For you to come along.
