‘Our Histories’ was finished one long hot June night when I was still psychologically smarting over a messy love affair. It had left a bitter taste in my mouth (the first two verses pretty much spell that out) & I had struggled with the song for a year or so, wanting to work something positive out of the experience. I was reading through some of our correspondence when an epiphany struck me & I felt a kind of redemption. As I lay the pen down on the final verse, the heatwave suddenly broke in a climactic thunderstorm. Life often mirrors art like that.
‘Our Histories’ was mined from the same rich seam that bore ‘Losing Streak’, ‘Any Way I Can’ & ‘The Best Thing’ back in 2014. With its sing-along chorus, it has formed the centrepiece of my live set ever since & I’m glad the studio version is finally getting a release. Eagle-eyed (or bat-eared?) listeners may remember the track snuck out in 2018 on the 'Al's Archive' concert EP ‘Live at the Flicks (Veselí nad Moravou, 22.9.16)’, albeit in a frenzied, hell-for-leather version. Well, as you know, history repeats itself... I hope you’ll enjoy this slightly warped, psych-tinged, cosmic country version.
lyrics
Every time we meet,
We're giving off sparks.
So why do you kiss me,
But only in the dark?
I believe, I believe
That we were meant to be,
But maybe I'm astray,
Barking up the wrong tree.
Ahhhh…
Ahhhh…
Ahhhh...
Every time we part,
You seem to disappear.
So why do you tell me
What you know I want to hear?
I believe, I believe
That I won't be denied,
But maybe I'm mistaken, taken,
Taken for a ride.
Ahhhh…
Ahhhh…
Ahhhh...
Every time we love,
We learn a little more.
So why curse our histories,
If we're not keeping score?
I believe, I believe
Our past has scattered clues.
So to all the girls I've loved:
These words go out to you.
Ahhhh...
These words go out to you.
Ahhhh...
These words go out to you.
Ahhhh...
